Why doesn’t God Answer my prayer?

I hear people ask this question every day. But more importantly, I’ve been there, asking why aren’t my prayers answered? The answer will shock you.

There isn’t one passage in the Bible where God explains why He doesn’t answer our prayers. Not one! In fact, every indication from the Bible would indicate that God wants to answer our prayers:

John 14:13-14 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

John 15:7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.

So if God wants to answer our prayer, why is there unanswered prayer? Could it be that it is our ignorance and complacency that tolerate unanswered prayer? Could it be that we were not designed for unanswered prayer and that is why it bothers us so much?

Jesus tells us something important about prayer in Luke 18:1 “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.”

Why would Jesus tell us to always pray and not give up? Apparently, Jesus, in His prayer life with the Father found that His answers didn’t come instantly either.

That’s why James 1:2-4 says: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Why does the testing of our faith produce perseverance? Because the answer doesn’t always come instantly. But James goes on to say that perseverance will bring the result so that we will not be lacking anything.

So, one reason that our prayers don’t get answered is because we give up before the answer comes. Hebrews 10:36 tells us “For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise.”

So hold on, keep trusting God, the answer IS coming.
